For many years First Presbyterian Church has sent a work camp group to Clairvaux Farm, a homeless shelter ministry near Elton, Maryland. John Bitzer now handles the arrangements and has scheduled this year’s trip for the week of June 25 to July 1, 2017. It would be so helpful if you would let John know of your interest in this trip. He is in particular need of adult leadership, especially female.

Healing was an integral part of the ministry of Jesus which the church has been called to continue as one dimension of its concern for the wholeness of people. Through services for wholeness, the church enacts in worship its ministry as a healing community. We will have our first Service of Wholeness on June 25 at 7 p.m. Going forward, the Session has approved services on All Saint’s Day (November 1) at 7 p.m. and on the Sunday evening before Mother’s Day (7 p.m.). These services are open to all, not restricted to those desiring healing for themselves. Prayer for others, for our nation, for our families, for friends, or prayers for those we don’t know who need healing are welcome. We will be sure our friends in AA feel welcome to this service, and you are encouraged to share the possibility of this service with people you encounter in need of healing.
The vital element of worship in the service for wholeness is prayer since this is essentially a time of waiting in faith upon God. Thanksgiving for God’s promise of wholeness, intercessions, and supplications will be offered. The service will provide scripture and brief interpretations focused on announcing the gospel’s promise of wholeness through Christ. Time for spoken, sung, and silent prayer. Enacted prayer in the form of the laying on of hands and anointing with oil will also be offered by the pastor and an elder.
God’s healing is to be understood not as the result of the holiness, earnestness, skill of those enacting the prayers, or of the faith of the ones seeking healing, but as the gift of God through the power of the Holy Spirit. Worshipping together for this purpose is a visible enactment that we trust God’s healing work to be active in our world, both when we can see it and when we cannot.

Lunch will be provided and we will have plenty of bottled water on hand! Not feeling up to heavy cleaning or lifting? Please come and help set up and serve lunch! All are welcome! We can also use cleaning supplies; paper towels, rags, Mr. Clean, etc. Everything will be put to good use.
We held a similar event in July 2013, and the 20 or so of us who gathered to clean and prepare our building for the fall had a great time of work, fun, fellowship and food. We hope many will consider this as an opportunity to bond with fellow congregants. As they say, “many hands make light work.” Looking forward to seeing you on Saturday, July 22!
